A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
