Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
