New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such treatments must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
